HISTORY TO COME ALIVE AT FIRST A.M.E. ZION CHURCH
Church celebrates 175 years of worship, praise and service to the community
PATERSON – September 10, 2009 - Members of First A.M.E. Zion Church will commemorate the church’s rich history on Sunday, September 13 at 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The morning worship service will be held at 326 Ellison Street.
The event’s guest speaker will be Bishop Louis Hunter, Presiding Prelate of Mid Atlantic I, the music ministry will provide praise and worship through choral selections and praise dancing and a video presentation, documenting the church’s history, which dates back to 1834, will be displayed. This video highlights notable moments through candid interviews with clergy and members, one being a direct descendent to one of the church’s pioneers, as well as rare photos, footage and news article clippings, some dating back to 1945. The service will conclude with the rededication of the church’s newly renovated parsonage.
Community and church members will culminate the anniversary’s festivities at a banquet to be held at the Bethwood in Totowa from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Interviews and photo opportunities are available.
Located in Paterson, New Jersey, First A.M.E. Zion Church is the oldest African American Church in Passaic County. It is the cornerstone of spirituality and serves over 150 congregants in addition to providing spiritual, financial and emotional support to community members. It prides itself on promoting discipleship, stewardship, worship and fellowship.
